Frequently Asked Questions: Scalp Micro-Pigmentation

What is SMP?

SMP stands for Scalp Micropigmentation. It is a procedure that replicates the look of hair follicles, or to create the appearance of hair density, by embedding ink into the upper layer of the skin. Micropigmentation is similar to that of a tattoo, but the needles are much smaller and do not penetrate as deep as traditional tattoos do.

What services do you provide?

We offer hair replication, and hair density treatments, and can discuss which treatment may be right for you, depending on your unique situation.

We also offer scar revision treatments for surgery, hair transplant, and other specific types of scars.

COMING SOON- Hair Restoration Treatments:

Treatments such as Microneedling using Vital Essentials CLHR and Elapromed Electroporation are excellent options for those with hair loss who would like to try other non-surgical treatments for hair restoration before committing to scalp micropigmentation. These treatments can stimulate hair growth over time with weekly and monthly treatments, depending on which treatment you choose.

Is Scalp Micropigmentation Safe?

We only use the highest quality single use needles, and non iron-based ink. Our technicians are fully trained and qualified to perform SMP treatments, are OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen Prevention certified, and our business is registered with the city of New Westminster, and is Fraser Health inspected and approved.

Your health and safety is of the utmost importance to us, and we ensure we are following protocol with each treatment we perform. It is extremely important, especially in an industry that is currently unregulated, to ensure that any establishment that offers micropigmentation, tattoo, or other personal services is following the proper sanitization and has infection control plans and procedures in place.

I would like to give SMP a try, do you offer semi-permanent options?

It is best to look into your options around what procedure will work best for you. We can recommend, explain, and show examples of procedures to you, but only you can decide what is best for you. The inks we use are permanent. The results are quite long-lasting with proper care, and are stable in hue.

Will the ink change colour or fade?

With proper after care, and sun protection, a scalp micro-pigmentation treatment can last years before requiring a touch up. Use sunscreen, wear a hat, and do not use alcohol-based products on your scalp. The ink KB Scalp Micropigmentation BC uses are non-iron based, and permanent. It has been specially formulated specifically for its intended use.

Will you be able to match my hair colour?

In most cases, yes. We have shades of ink that can be mixed to match the shade of your hair for hair replication treatments. Please note that at this time, we cannot match true redheads (red at the visible hair follicle), and true blondes (when shaved to the hair follicle, there is no shadow with true blondes and SMP is not recommended due to not being able to hue match).

For hair density treatments, we use different techniques than hair replication, and at this time can only work with those who have committed to a darker hair colour, such as medium/ dark brown, black, and medium/ dark greying hair.
